Louise Strawbridge - 2007 Resume

L O U I S E L. S T R A W B R I D G E

Louise Strawbridge makes constructions/ assemblages and artists' books. She uses found and unconventional materials because they already have some history and can produce surprising juxtapositions and a sense of mystery. "Beauty" can seem quite varied from this vantage point and yield fresh, transforming insights. Her work often relates to finding stillness vs. being busy or about nature vs. high-tech, consumer driven world. "Art's value is its uselessness."(Adorno) She tries to "go beyond what I know and can know" (Eva Hesse) in her art. Trained in English Literature, she received her M.A from The University of Chicago and taught English for many years. She has worked fulltime as an artist since 1996, lived in London 1998-2002 where she worked for Wyvern Book Bindery, and has now re-established a Philadelphia studio where she accepts commissions for books and pieces for special occasions.
